Neville Jones OBE

Officer, Royal Navy, 1942–1946

Neville joined the Navy in May 1942. He was a journalist by profession and became a ship secretary.

At first Neville served on the destroyer HMS Laforey in the Mediterranean. In March 1944, shortly after he was transferred from the ship, it was sunk by a German U Boat.

Neville joined HMS Speaker in August 1944. It was part of the Royal Navy’s Pacific fleet and was one of the first British ships to reach Nagasaki after the atomic bomb was dropped there in August 1945.

Neville left the Navy in 1946 and pursued a career in journalism. He moved to Burnham-on-Sea in 1972.
