Paul was born in Vienna in 1932. Following the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, daily life for Jewish people quickly became very difficult. Paul left Austria in 1938 with his parents and sister. Many Jews who remained behind, including Paul’s grandparents, were later murdered by the Nazis.
Paul’s family travelled first to Cyprus, then to Egypt, Israel and Tanzania.
Paul later studied law and had a distinguished legal career, including with the European Court of Justice. He settled in Langport 30 years ago with his wife and children.
