Reg Shattock

North Petherton, Somerset

Home Guard, 1940–1944

Reg was born in 1920. When he was six months old his parents moved to a farm in North Petherton where he still lives today.

Reg joined the Home Guard soon after the outbreak of the war. He was later recruited to one of the secretive ‘Auxiliary Units’. These units were organised in 1940 as part of the preparations to resist a German invasion.

Members of the Auxiliary Units had to sign the Official Secrets Act. In 1944 when the units were stood down members were told that ‘no public recognition will be possible’. Reg’s family knew nothing of his important wartime role until decades later.
